The Mother Who Was Supposed to Be Dead

Chapter 09 - The Mother Who Was Supposed to Be Dead
Lydia lived in a small coastal apartment.
She opened the door and stared at Claire as if she had been expected.
“You finally found me.”
Claire’s anger sharpened.
“You know who I am?”
Lydia invited her inside.
The apartment contained photographs of Evan from every stage of his life.
There were also photographs of Claire.
Some had been taken from a distance outside hotels and charity events.
Lydia explained that Evan had lied about her death because he was ashamed of her past.
She had served time for financial fraud when he was a teenager.
After prison, Evan refused public contact with her.
But he never stopped asking for advice.
Claire looked at the bank statements.
“You taught him how to steal from me.”
Lydia’s eyes hardened.
“I taught him how people hide money. He decided whose money to hide.”
She claimed she had recently warned Evan to stop.
Claire did not believe her until Lydia produced a recorded conversation.
Evan’s voice was clear.
If Claire finds out, I lose everything.
