The Diamond Necklace That Was Never Meant for Her

Chapter 01 - The Diamond Necklace That Was Never Meant for Her
## chapter 01 - The Card Beneath the Diamonds
Claire Morgan had never planned to walk into Bellamy Jewelers that afternoon.
Her six-year-old daughter, Lily, had stopped outside the window and pressed both hands against the glass.
“Mommy, look at the princess necklace.”
Claire smiled.
“We’re only looking.”
That was all she could afford.
Since her husband, Andrew, died two years earlier, Claire had learned to measure everything.
Groceries.
Rent.
School shoes.
Even dreams.
She carried Lily inside.
The store was quiet and bright, filled with polished glass cases and soft golden lights.
Then a young man in a navy suit hurried toward them.
His name tag read:
ETHAN BLAKE — MANAGER.
He looked at Claire.
Then at Lily.
His face changed.
“Mrs. Morgan?”
Claire frowned.
“Yes?”
Ethan seemed suddenly nervous.
“I have something for you.”
“For me?”
He disappeared into the back room.
When he returned, he carried a dark velvet box.
He opened it.
Inside was a diamond necklace.
Claire stared.
It was breathtaking.
And unmistakably expensive.
“There must be a mistake.”
Ethan shook his head.
“This was purchased six years ago.”
“By whom?”
Ethan hesitated.
“Your husband.”
Claire’s heart stopped.
Andrew had never mentioned a necklace.
Ethan handed her the box.
Claire lifted the necklace.
Something underneath caught her attention.
A small gold card.
She pulled it out.
There was handwriting on the back.
Claire recognized Andrew’s writing immediately.
Her hands began trembling.
The message contained only one sentence.
If Claire ever comes here with our daughter, give her the necklace and tell her Rebecca is still alive.
Claire stared at Ethan.
“Who is Rebecca?”
Ethan’s face went pale.
He looked at Lily.
Then back at Claire.
“I thought you knew.”
“Knew what?”
Ethan swallowed.
“Rebecca was Andrew’s first wife.”
Claire almost laughed.
“That’s impossible.”
But Ethan did not smile.

Then he said the words that shattered everything Claire believed about her marriage.
“Mrs. Morgan, your husband never divorced her.”
