The next morning, Claire went to Union Trust Bank.
Her attorney, Melissa Grant, came with her.
Lily stayed with Claire’s mother.
Safe-deposit box 317 had been registered under Andrew’s name.
But Claire was listed as an authorized beneficiary after his death.
Inside were three things.
A photograph.
A stack of letters.
And a birth certificate.
Claire picked up the photograph first.
Andrew stood beside a beautiful blonde woman.
Rebecca.
They looked young.
Happy.
Married.
Claire turned it over.
June 14, 2011.
Claire had met Andrew in 2016.
The birth certificate belonged to a boy.
Samuel Morgan.
Father:
Andrew Morgan.
Mother:
Rebecca Hayes Morgan.
Claire sat down.
Andrew had another child.
A son.
Her daughter had a brother.
Melissa whispered, “Claire…”
“I’m fine.”
She wasn’t.
Claire opened the first letter.
It had been written by Andrew.
Rebecca,
I know you believe leaving was the only way to protect Samuel.
I’m beginning to think you were right.
Charles knows about the account.
He knows I helped you.
Claire stopped reading.
“Who is Charles?”
Melissa looked at another document.
Charles Morgan.
Andrew’s older brother.
Claire knew him well.
Charles had stood beside her at Andrew’s funeral.
He had helped with the insurance paperwork.
He visited Lily every Christmas.
He called himself Uncle Charlie.
Claire continued reading.

Claire slowly lowered the letter.
