Claire nearly collapsed.
Police surrounded the school.
Security footage showed Charles leaving with Lily.
She had trusted him.
Why wouldn’t she?
He was Uncle Charlie.
Claire blamed herself.
Rebecca stopped her.
“This is what he does.”
“He has my daughter.”
“And panic will help him.”
Claire looked at Rebecca.
“How are you calm?”
“I’m not.”
Rebecca’s hands were shaking.
“I’ve just been afraid longer.”
Samuel remembered something.
Charles once owned a hunting lodge near Lake Harrison.
Police searched property records.
The lodge had been sold.
But a neighboring warehouse remained under a shell company listed in Andrew’s evidence.
Agent Reed sent officers.
Claire insisted on going.
They found Lily inside.
Safe.
Terrified.
But Charles was gone.
He had left a message.
Bring me the necklace and this ends.
Claire held Lily for a long time.
Then Lily whispered:
“Uncle Charlie was crying.”
Claire pulled back.
“What?”
“He said Daddy ruined everything.”
That detail mattered.
Charles was frightened.
Not powerful.
The evidence had changed the balance.
