The Trial

Chapter 13 - The Trial
Charles’s trial attracted national attention.
Former employees testified.
Families learned money had been stolen from elderly relatives.
Andrew’s evidence became central.
Then Charles’s attorney attacked Rebecca.
He portrayed her as unstable.
Dishonest.
A woman who disappeared with her child.
Rebecca almost broke.
Claire sat behind her every day.
On cross-examination, the attorney asked:
“Mrs. Morgan, isn’t it true that you lied for years?”
Rebecca answered:
“Yes.”
The courtroom went quiet.
“And you expect us to trust you?”
“No.”
The attorney looked surprised.
Rebecca continued.
“I expect you to trust the records.”
That answer changed everything.
She did not pretend to be perfect.
She simply told the truth.
Charles was convicted.
When the verdict was read, Rebecca did not celebrate.

Neither did Claire.
Justice felt quieter than they expected.
