Samuel had never known a normal family dinner.
His life had been built around secrecy.
Different towns.
Different schools.
Different names.
Claire invited him and Rebecca to stay with her temporarily.
Temporary became several months.
Lily loved having a brother.
Samuel complained.
But secretly, he loved it too.
One evening, Claire found him sitting in Andrew’s old office.
“You okay?”
Samuel nodded.
“He never told me about this house.”
Claire sat beside him.
“He never told me about you.”
Samuel looked down.
“Did he love me?”
Claire answered honestly.
“I don’t know everything he felt.”
Samuel’s face fell.
“But I know he carried your photograph in his wallet.”
Claire had found it days earlier.
Behind a photograph of Lily.
Two children.
Two lives Andrew had tried unsuccessfully to keep apart.
Samuel cried.
Claire put an arm around him.
He did not call her Mom.
