Claire drove to the lake house.
She had avoided visiting since her mother died.
The small white house stood beside the water exactly as she remembered it.
On the kitchen wall was a pencil mark showing Claire’s height at age ten.
Daniel had known what the house meant to her.
That made his plan feel crueler.
While searching an old cabinet, Claire found a letter written by her mother years earlier.
It contained one simple sentence:
Never let fear convince you to surrender what love built.
Claire sat at the table and cried for the first time since discovering the affair.
Then she called her attorney.
