Their sixteen-year-old daughter, Lily, had been standing on the stairs.
Neither parent had noticed her.
“How long?” she asked.
Daniel’s face collapsed.
Claire rushed toward her, but Lily stepped back.
She looked at her father.
“How long have you been lying to Mom?”
Daniel could not answer.
Lily left the house and went to Claire’s sister.

That evening Claire packed Daniel’s clothes into suitcases.
