Daniel admitted he had lost money.
A lot of money.
Two years earlier, he had invested in a development project that collapsed. Instead of telling Claire, he borrowed more, convinced he could recover the losses.
He did not.
Then he met Vanessa.
Claire listened quietly as her husband described one bad decision after another.
He insisted he never intended to take the lake house permanently.
He planned to use it as temporary collateral.
“You forged my name.”
“I was desperate.”
“You brought another woman into our home.”
Daniel looked away.
Claire realized desperation had become his favorite excuse.
But desperation did not send romantic messages.
