Chapter 01 - THE CALL MY GRANDFATHER MADE WHILE THEY ARRESTED ME
## chapter 01 - Arrested in His Living Room
Noah Reed knew something was wrong the moment he saw the dining table.
Spaghetti covered the floor. Three orange prescription bottles lay open beside a stack of legal papers. His eighty-two-year-old grandfather, Samuel, sat in his wheelchair with a phone pressed to his ear while his home nurse, Karen Blake, stood behind him in blue scrubs.
“What did you give him?” Noah demanded.
Karen stepped back and called the police.
By the time Officers Cole and Ramirez arrived, Karen was crying and claiming Noah had forced his way into the house to steal Samuel’s money. Noah’s wife, Emily, tried to hold him back as the officers pulled his arms behind him.
“Look at the pills,” Noah shouted. “She’s drugging him!”
Karen calmly told the officers that Samuel had dementia and that Noah had become violent after learning he had been removed from the will.
Samuel looked frightened and confused.
Then he spoke into the phone.
“No,” he said slowly. “Do not send another ambulance.”
Everyone turned toward him.

Samuel raised one trembling hand and pointed past the officers.
“Send a detective,” he said. “The woman standing behind me is trying to steal my house.”
