Caleb’s Last Bargain

Chapter 17 - Caleb’s Last Bargain
Caleb offered to plead guilty if Samuel signed away the civil claims against Haven Ridge.
The prosecutor said accepting would spare the victims a long trial.
Samuel refused.
“This is not only my house.”
He testified for two days.
At times he lost his place. At times his hands shook. The defense tried to turn every pause into proof of incompetence.
Then Samuel looked directly at the jury.
“Age has taken speed from me,” he said. “It has not taken the truth.”
Helen Brooks testified after him.
So did Mark.
So did Noah.
The jury convicted Caleb of fraud, elder exploitation, conspiracy, and forgery.
