The Doctor’s Other Patients

Chapter 12 - The Doctor’s Other Patients
Detective Ortiz reviewed the doctor’s records.
Seven Haven Ridge clients had been declared incompetent within weeks of signing property transfers.
Four had no close relatives nearby.
Two had died shortly afterward.
The seventh, a seventy-nine-year-old widow named Helen Brooks, was still alive.
Noah and Emily visited her assisted-living facility with police permission.
Helen remembered Karen.
She remembered Caleb.
Most importantly, she remembered Samuel.
They had met in a waiting room while both were being evaluated.
Samuel had slipped her a note that read:
They are making us look confused. Remember your address.
Helen had kept the note inside her shoe.
Her testimony connected the entire scheme.

But the defense still argued Samuel’s memories could not be trusted.
Then Helen revealed she had recorded every meeting on a small hearing device her daughter had purchased.
