A year later, the orchard reopened to the public.
Children picked apples beneath the trees Ruth had planted.
Helen Brooks cut the ribbon.
Officer Cole attended with his family and joked that Noah looked better without handcuffs.
Mark arrived late carrying pies from the restaurant where he worked.
Noah hesitated before letting him through the gate.
Then he stepped aside.
It was not full forgiveness.
It was a beginning.
Samuel watched his son and grandson set up tables together.
He whispered to Emily, “Ruth would have made them do that years ago.”
