The officers stopped fastening the handcuffs.
Karen laughed nervously and said Samuel was having another episode. She reached for his phone, but Samuel pulled it against his chest.
Officer Cole moved between them.
Noah pointed toward the table. Beneath the spilled food was a document titled DURABLE POWER OF ATTORNEY. Samuel’s signature appeared at the bottom, but the date was from a week when he had been hospitalized and unable to hold a pen.
Karen insisted the document had been prepared by Samuel’s attorney.
Emily noticed something else.
A second set of papers transferred Samuel’s house to a company called Haven Ridge Senior Services.
Karen worked for Haven Ridge.
Officer Ramirez photographed everything and called a supervisor. Karen’s calm expression disappeared.
Samuel whispered, “She told me Noah had stopped visiting because he wanted me dead.”
Noah dropped to his knees beside the wheelchair.
“I came every Sunday.”
Samuel’s eyes filled with tears.
“I know that now.”

The name on the screen was Mark Reed—Noah’s father, Samuel’s estranged son.
