Samuel was taken to a hospital for evaluation.
Blood tests showed dangerously high levels of a sedative he had never been prescribed. Karen had told everyone the pills were for anxiety.
Emily returned to the house with Detective Ortiz and found a handwritten medicine log hidden behind a kitchen drawer.
For six weeks, Karen had doubled Samuel’s evening dose on days when attorneys or real-estate agents visited.
Beside several entries she had written one word:
Compliant.
Noah read it twice.
His anger became something colder.
Samuel had not been confused because of age. Someone had been manufacturing his confusion.
At the bottom of the last page was a set of initials: M.R.
Noah looked at his father.

Mark whispered, “Those are not mine.”
But the initials matched.
