Chapter 11 - Mark Takes the Stand
At the preliminary hearing, Caleb’s attorney portrayed Samuel as confused and Noah as an angry grandson chasing an inheritance.
Then Mark testified.
He admitted his debts.
He admitted pressuring Samuel to sell.
He admitted accepting money from Caleb as an “advance” against the future sale.
The prosecutor warned him that he could face charges.
Mark continued.
He explained how Caleb used his shame to keep him silent.
When the attorney asked whether Mark expected the family to forgive him, Mark looked at Noah.
“No,” he said. “I expect them to remember that I helped create the danger.”
It was the first time Noah had heard his father accept responsibility without asking for comfort.
