The Son Who Tried to Take Everything—Until His Father Made One Phone Call

Chapter 01 - The Son Who Tried to Take Everything—Until His Father Made One Phone Call

## chapter 01 - The Call From the Wheelchair

Arthur Whitmore had spent seventy-eight years believing that family was the one thing money could never buy and grief could never destroy.

He was wrong.

That morning, the living room of his suburban home looked like a crime scene.

A bowl had shattered across the hardwood floor. Prescription bottles rolled beneath the coffee table. Papers from Arthur’s estate folder were scattered beside a half-finished cup of tea.

And in the middle of it all, Arthur sat in his wheelchair, one trembling hand holding a phone to his ear.

Behind him stood Elena Brooks, the home-care nurse who had been helping him recover from a stroke.

Across the room, two police officers held back Arthur’s son, Daniel.

“Dad, tell them this is a misunderstanding!”

Arthur looked at his son.

Daniel was forty-two now, but for one strange second Arthur saw the boy who used to wait by the front window for him to come home from work.

Then he remembered the pill bottle Elena had found.

The forged power-of-attorney papers.

And the deed transferring Arthur’s house to a company he had never heard of.

Arthur tightened his grip on the phone.

“No,” he said.

Daniel went still.

Arthur spoke to the person on the other end.

“Mr. Collins, I need you to freeze everything.”

Daniel’s face lost its color.

That was when Arthur knew the betrayal was even bigger than he feared.
