Rachel had a secret too.
She had suspected Daniel was in financial trouble.
A year earlier he had asked her for $40,000.
She refused.
He begged her not to tell Arthur.
So she stayed silent.
“I thought I was protecting you,” she told her father.
Arthur sighed.
“Everyone keeps protecting me.”
Rachel started crying.
“I’m sorry.”

“No more protection.”
She looked confused.
“No more secrets disguised as protection,” he said.

They talked about money.
Health.
Fear.
Resentment.
