The Pills That Shouldn’t Have Been There

Chapter 02 - The Pills That Shouldn’t Have Been There
Three weeks earlier, Elena had noticed something wrong with Arthur’s medication.
He was sleeping too much.
His speech, which had improved after months of therapy, suddenly became slower.
His balance worsened.
Daniel told everyone it was normal.
“Dad had a stroke,” he said. “He’s declining.”
But Elena had cared for stroke patients for fifteen years.
This was different.
One morning, while organizing Arthur’s prescriptions, she found a bottle with no pharmacy label.
Inside were white tablets she did not recognize.
“Mr. Whitmore, who gave you these?”
Arthur frowned.
“Daniel.”
“What did he say they were?”
“For anxiety.”
Elena checked the medication list from Arthur’s doctor.
There was no new anxiety medication.
That afternoon, she called the clinic.
The nurse confirmed it.
Nothing had been prescribed.
Elena placed the mystery bottle in a locked drawer.
That evening Daniel arrived.
