Rachel wanted to call the police immediately.
Arthur stopped her.
“Not yet.”
He wanted to know how far Daniel had gone.
So they made a plan.
The next evening Rachel pretended to return to the airport.
Elena left at six.
Arthur took his normal prescribed medication and hid the mystery pills beneath his tongue, later spitting them into a tissue.
Then he pretended to become drowsy.
Daniel waited.
At nine-thirty, he entered Arthur’s office.
Arthur watched through a small camera Rachel had placed on a bookshelf.
Daniel opened the safe.
He removed bank documents.
Then he made a phone call.
“Everything is almost done,” he whispered.
Arthur strained to hear.
“The old man won’t fight it.”
A pause.
“No, Rachel doesn’t know.”
Another pause.
Then Daniel said something that broke Arthur’s heart.
“Once he’s declared incompetent, I control everything.”
Arthur closed his eyes.
