Rachel called the county recorder’s office.
The answer was worse than expected.
The Whitmore house had been transferred two weeks earlier.
Not sold exactly.
Transferred.
The new owner was a limited liability company called DMW Holdings.
Rachel searched the company registration.
The owner was Daniel Michael Whitmore.
Her brother.
She returned to the living room and found Arthur watching an old baseball game.
“Dad, Daniel transferred your house into his company.”
Arthur laughed.
For half a second Rachel thought he had not understood.
Then he saw her face.
His smile disappeared.
“He what?”
Elena placed the documents on his lap.
Arthur read slowly.
His hands trembled harder with every line.
“This house belonged to your mother and me for forty-six years.”
Rachel knelt beside him.
“We’ll fix it.”
Arthur looked toward the front door.
“Where is Daniel?”
