The person Daniel called was not a lawyer.
Her name was Vanessa Cole.
Rachel discovered that she worked for a private elder-care placement company.
Daniel had been secretly arranging to move Arthur into a long-term facility.
The contract was ready.
So was an application declaring Arthur unable to make financial decisions.
Vanessa stood to receive a large referral fee.
Daniel would gain control of Arthur’s assets.
Rachel confronted Vanessa by phone.
The woman panicked.
She claimed Daniel told her Arthur had advanced dementia.
“He doesn’t,” Rachel said.
“That’s not what I was told.”
“Did you ever meet him?”
Silence.
Rachel felt sick.
Daniel had built an entire version of Arthur that existed only on paper.
Confused.
Incompetent.
Helpless.
A man whose wishes no longer mattered.
Meanwhile, Arthur sat at his kitchen table practicing his signature with his recovering right hand.
