Chapter 12 - What the Lab Found
The mystery pills were tested.
They were prescription sedatives.
The medication itself was legal.
Giving it to Arthur without a prescription was not.
The dosage was strong enough to cause confusion, dizziness, and excessive sleepiness.
Exactly the symptoms Daniel had been documenting as evidence of cognitive decline.
Arthur read the medical report twice.
He felt nauseated.
Daniel had been creating the illness he planned to use against him.
The district attorney filed charges related to fraud, forgery, financial exploitation, and medication misuse.
Vanessa agreed to cooperate.
The fraudulent property transfer was reversed.
The money was frozen.
But Arthur did not feel victorious.
That evening Rachel found him staring at an old photograph.
Daniel at age nine.
Missing front tooth.
Baseball glove under one arm.
“He was a good boy,” Arthur whispered.
Rachel sat beside him.
“Maybe he was.”
Arthur wiped his eyes.
“What happened?”
Rachel had no answer.
