Dinner With a Liar

Chapter 06 - Dinner With a Liar
Rachel did not confront him immediately.
She wanted proof.
So they sat through dinner.
Daniel smiled.
He poured water for Arthur.
He asked Elena about physical therapy.
He hugged Rachel and said he wished she visited more often.
Then he placed two white tablets beside Arthur’s plate.
Elena’s voice sharpened.
“What are those?”
Daniel barely looked at her.
“Dad’s medication.”
“Which medication?”
Daniel hesitated.
Arthur watched him.
“For anxiety,” Daniel said.
Rachel leaned forward.
“What doctor prescribed them?”
Daniel’s smile vanished.
“Why is everyone interrogating me?”
Elena picked up the pills.
“I called his physician. These are not on his medication list.”
Daniel stood.
“You had no right.”
Arthur spoke quietly.
“She had every right.”
Daniel turned toward him.
For the first time, the mask slipped.
“Dad, you don’t know what you’re talking about.”
Arthur stared at his son.
And suddenly remembered hearing that sentence many times over the past month.
Whenever he questioned a bill.
Whenever he asked about the bank.
Whenever he complained that the pills made him dizzy.
You don’t know what you’re talking about.
Arthur finally understood.
