Daniel’s Letter

Chapter 15 - Daniel’s Letter
Six months after his arrest, Daniel wrote to Arthur.
The letter was twelve pages long.
Arthur left it unopened for three days.
Finally, he read it.
Daniel apologized.
Then blamed gambling.
Then blamed debt.
Then blamed panic.
Then apologized again.
Arthur nearly stopped reading.
On the final page, Daniel wrote:
I kept telling myself I was borrowing from the future. Then I realized I was stealing your present.
Arthur folded the letter.
He did not forgive Daniel that day.
But he wrote back.
Three sentences.
I love you.
I will not rescue you from the consequences.
Become someone who can live with the truth.
May you like
Daniel kept that letter.
Years later, he would say it was the first honest thing anyone had given him in a long time.
