After Arthur’s stroke, Daniel suddenly became the perfect son.
He visited every evening.
He brought groceries.
He paid bills.
He organized paperwork.
Neighbors praised him.
Arthur was grateful.
His daughter, Rachel, lived three states away and called every day, but Daniel was the one physically present.
At least that was what Arthur believed.
Then Elena began noticing patterns.
Daniel always arrived after business hours.
He spent more time in Arthur’s office than with Arthur.
He frequently asked Elena to leave early.
And whenever Rachel called, Daniel told her their father was too tired to speak.
One night Elena stayed late.
From the hallway, she heard Daniel arguing with Arthur.
“You promised the house would come to me.”
Arthur sounded confused.
“I promised nothing.”
“You said Rachel already had enough.”
“I said no such thing.”
Elena heard a chair scrape.
Then Daniel’s voice became soft.
Too soft.
“Dad, you’re forgetting things again.”
