Three years after the morning of the police arrest, Elena prepared to leave for her final day as Arthur’s full-time nurse.
He no longer needed daily care.
Rachel had moved closer.
Daniel visited twice a month.
Arthur rolled his wheelchair to the front door.
“You saved my life,” he told Elena.
She shook her head.
“I noticed something.”
“You believed me.”
“That was my job.”
Arthur smiled.
“No. It was your character.”
He handed her an envelope.
Inside was not money.
It was a letter of recommendation and the first board appointment for the Margaret Whitmore Elder Safety Fund.
Elena laughed through tears.
“You’re impossible.”
Arthur grinned.
“I’ve been told.”
When she left, the house felt quiet.
